As a part of the Science Promotion Week, the institute holds an Open Day programme during 7 -14 November 2017. The academia, students and general public are invited to visit the garden and its infrastructure as a part of the science promotion and also to familiarize with the R&D activities of the institute for public benefit.

Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences (MBGIPS) is organizing science orientation programme funded by KSCSTE for school students in the age group 13 – 16 during 16th to 19th May 2017. The programme to be organized at MBGIPS, Kozhikode encompasses interactive/activity oriented sessions by eminent scientists/ academicians. The selection of students to the programmes will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Dr. P.K. K. Nair, the doyen of Indian Palynological Science and Father of Indian Palynology, passed away at Bangalore on 21st January 2017 MBGIPS expresses deep condolence on the sad demise of Nair Sir.

Eminent Scientist Award 2015

Dr R Prakashkumar, Director, Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences, Kozhikode is Conferred with the Eminent Scientist Award 2015 of the International Foundation for Environment and Ecology on the 2nd IFEE Conference in Coimbatore. The Award is for the overall contributions of Dr Prakashkumar in Plant Sciences.

MBGIPS received the Best Informative Stall Award in the Global Ayurveda Festival 2016 in Calicut



The plant kingdom represents an extraordinary reservoir of molecules that can be useful to the mankind in various forms. Though a multitude of medicinal and aromatic plants occur in the state, their phytochemistry and potential utility are less understood and exploited. In this scenario, Kerala Academy of Sciences (KAS) is organizing a one day ‘International Symposium on Phytochemistry’. The programme is associated with ‘Prof. Dr. A. Hisham Endowment Award’ ceremony, to commemorate the contributions of late Prof. Dr. A. Hisham, an internationally reputed phytochemist and academician from Kerala. The focus of the symposium will be the chemistry of plants and the sessions consist of endowment lecture in Phytochemistry by Prof. Dr. Khozirah Shaari, UPM, Malaysia, endowment award presentation in Phytochemistry, invited talks and poster presentations in Phytochemistry. On behalf of Kerala Academy of Sciences, you are cordially invited to attend the Symposium.

Call for poster presentation abstracts Abstracts of research works (250 words) in Phytochemistry are invited for poster presentations during the symposium. Best poster awards in different sections such as essential oil chemistry, spectroscopic identification and phytopharmacology will be presented during the valedictory function. A soft copy of the abstract should be sent by e-mail to the Organizing Secretary, ISP-2016 on or before 25-01-2016. Acceptance of abstracts will be intimated before 30.01.2016. Accepted abstracts will be published as proceedings during the symposium.


Registration The participants are requested to fill the registration form that will be available in KAS and MBGIPS websites shortly and send to the Organizing Secretary through e-mail, along with the registration fee (Students/Research fellows Rs.300/-; Faculty/Scientists: Rs.500/-; Foreign participants: $50), before10.2.2016.

Lichen Garden at Malabar Botanical Garden Inaugurated by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan

Lichens, a unique group of plants remarkable for mutualistic symbiotic association of two distinct groups such as algae and fungi, are being introduced to the Malabar Botanical Garden as a separate section. The planting of Lichen at MBG was inaugurated by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan at the function of International Symposium on Plantation Crops (PLACROSYM) on 10th December 2014, by handing over a lichen, Parmelia sp. to Dr. R.Prakashkumar, Director, MBG.
